This course focuses on providing a survey of Japanese literature. We will consider selected representative works of Japanese literature with a focus on the modern period from Meiji and after. We will look at a few pre-modern works to consider their links and influence in the Japanese literary tradition. Through our discussions and introductions to the various authors and their works, we will learn how to approach a literary text by considering both how the text is
presented, and the details of its content.
