Japan is a geographic location with a long and well-documented history, globally renowned aesthetic traditions, and an inescapable popular media presence. But how does this information inform our understandings of Japan, and how might it be further complicated? Drawing on history, anthropology, and cultural studies, this course will introduce several leading issues with real world relevance to explore how "Japan" is always more complicated than one might think. Evaluation for the course will be comprised of student participation (including weekly comment sheets) and an in-class exam.
