This course aims to broadly examine Japanese foreign policy and diplomacy between 1952-2052.
Of particular focus will be the examination of how normal or realistic Japan's projection of power (hard, soft, and smart) is the the 21st Century. This course aims to provide students with a better understanding of Japan's relations with key state actors such as the United States, South Korea, Russia, China, and India among others. Additionally, key issues such as peacekeeping/security, ODA, human rights, and environmental challenges will receive special attention.

This course will allow students to:
1) Examine key relationships within Japanese foreign policy
2) Understand significant issues facing Japan
3) Gain a better understanding of Japan's foreign policy choices
4) Examine their own role and potential as grassroots diplomats
