Studying abroad is commonly viewed as a transformative experience; at least it can be.
For
many, a study abroad experience represents an opportunity for a student
to reevaluate their personal values and goals, to explore new career
pathways and discover new skills, and to gain a fresh perspective on and
appreciation for the participant's home society and culture and the
role that home country plays in the world.
In this seminar, we
take a look at the issues students face before, during, and after a
study abroad program. We take a look at the ups and downs,
opportunities and challenges, positives and negatives the promises and
pitfalls that the study abroad experience can represent.
As part of the "Study Abroad Preparation Courses" the learning goals of this course include:
1) To challenge students to develop a long-term vision
2) To develop critical thinking skills
3) To gain a greater understanding of democracy in the 21st Century
4) To foster civic engagement
5) To raise awareness of a student's responsibility as a global citizen
6) To raise the consciousness of study abroad opportunities
